What is an HDMI cable?

An HDMI cable is a multimedia connection cable that plugs into an HDMI port. This cable type transfers the visuals and audio from an input device, like a computer, and outputs it into a display, like a TV or a monitor. The resolution of the image is usually 720p or 1080i, though 4k HDMI cables are available. The versions of HDMI cables have improved over the years from HDMI 1.0, released in 2002, to HDMI 2.1 cables, released in 2017. The types of HDMI connectors include standard, dual-link, mini, micro, and automotive connection systems, which are primarily for vehicles. There are also converters that allow connections to other connection types. Examples of these are USB to HDMI adapters, VGA to HDMI adapters, and RCA to HDMI converters. Though HDMI cables come in different sizes, HDMI extenders can lengthen the size of the cable to suit a buyer's needs.

What is an HDMI cable made of?

An HDMI cable is made of many different types of materials for the various components. The outer casing is usually made of PVC. The inner HDMI connectors are made of metal. The most common type is copper, though aluminum is sometimes used. The connectors are sometimes gold-plated. The HDMI cord is also usually made of PVC, the same material as the outer jacket. Some manufacturers use materials such as nylon as a stylistic choice.

What are the advantages of HDMI cables?

HDMI has many advantages, especially over older connector types. Unlike older cable types like RCA, which had a connector for each media aspect, HDMI cables are multimedia and are able to transfer visuals and sound with only one connection. HDMI cables are high-definition and, therefore, have good sound and visual quality. They are a big improvement in terms of specs over previous cable types.
